The fifth edition of the event, which will start tomorrow between Reana del Rojale and Tavagnacco (Udine) with the first concert by multi-instrumentalist UT Gandhi, was presented today in the Friulian capital, in the presence of FVG regional councilors Moreno Lirutti and Edy Morandini, and Udine City Council's Culture Councillor Federico Angelo Pirone.
The cross-border project is that of the Brilliant Corners Quartet, an ensemble composed of Francesco Ivone, Giovanni Maier (for Italy), Matjaž Bajc, and Urban Kušar (Slovenia), which will include a concert in Basaglia Park in Trieste on August 19, and a repeat performance on August 24 in Škofja Loka, an ancient Slovenian town northwest of the capital Ljubljana. The Italian-Slovenian group will perform pieces by Thelonious Monk and Rocky Mountain.
"Our cultural program has always been international," explained More Than Jazz artistic director Mansutti, "and this is also expressed in the artistic residency we organize in collaboration with a number of European music universities, including Graz, Barcelona, Bern, Rome, and Trieste. A young musician is selected for each university, and then we offer them an artistic residency in Friuli, at the end of which they can produce their own shared project and perform with a jazz music start, such as Javier Girotto, who will be on stage in Udine on July 31 at 9:30 p.m." This and other concerts are part of the journey toward Gorizia-Nova Gorica European Capital of Culture 2025. Other guests at the festival include the Jeunesse Musicale World Big Band, led by trombonist Luis Bonilla; the violinist Anais Drago, winner of the Top Jazz 2022 in the new proposals section; and the quartet led by Peter Erskine, famous drummer of Weather Report, performing in Udine on July 27.
